USDA Updates SNAP Benefits Effective October 1, 2021

USDA Food & Nutrition ServiceThe 2018 Farm Bill called for a review of the Thrifty Food Plan. The Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) reflects the cost of groceries associated with providing a healthy, cost-conscious diet for a family of four. The price associated with TFP in June, sets the maximum Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits a family of four will receive at the start of the new fiscal on October 1. An evaluation of the TFP found that the actual cost of providing a healthy, cost-conscious diet for a family of four was 21% more than what current benefits reflect. As a result, beginning October 1, 2021, the average SNAP benefit will increase by $36.24 per person. SNAP currently provides benefits to 42 million people on a monthly basis.
