Safe Routes to School

Research shows that the quality and presence of sidewalks, bike lanes, and crosswalks, and the accessibility and affordability of public transit all affect physical activity levels and safety for residents in nearby areas.In the context of the Champion Provider Fellowship program, safe routes to schoolrefers to any effort making it safer and more convenient, accessible, and affordable for students and their families to walk, bike or take public transit to school.

On this page, you will find information and resources to support policy, system and environmental changes designed to create safe routes to school. We have also highlighted Champion Provider Fellows that are currently engaged in Safe Routes to Schoolwork. And finally, we have provided a stepwise toolkit intended for health care providers (and their local health department partners), outlining ways in which they can begin to engage in safe routes to schoolefforts in their local communities.
